Our Team

SUPER STUDENT ATHLETES TRUSTEES

There are a number of ways that you can get involved with Super Student Athletes. Whether you are interested in making an in-kind donation of goods or services, or just volunteering to spend time beautifying and maintaining the Clubs or serving as a mentor, tutor, or guest speaker, we would love for you to be involved. Your commitment can be as large or as small as you would like. If you are a local business, school, club or church, please think about inviting an S.S.A. representative to share our story and mission at your next gathering. You can even spend your time and/or money to support our Super Student Athletes Celebrity Kickball game!

Mario Urrutia – Founder and Executive Director

Mario Urrutia is a Louisville native and former football wide receiver for the University of Louisville’s Cardinal football team; He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals after his junior year. He played for the Cincinnati Bengals and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL. Mario then continued his professional football career playing Arena football and Canadian Football. One day after playing professional football for seven years, Mario decided professional football career was over for him.

Driving home to Louisville his thoughts were “What could I have done better to prepare myself for life after football?” His dream has always been to help young people set and reach their goals. Mario’s dream started when he was a senior in high school. He was a volunteer mentor to young children. In 2011, he established a non-profit organization to provide Physical Education, Nutrition, Leadership Development, and Economic Empowerment to children ages 8 – 14 years old. Mario made the commitment to finish his college education. He knew this needed to be completed because he thought how could he lead young children and preach the importance of education if he failed to complete his. May 2016, Mario Urrutia received his college diploma from the University of Louisville He has a degree in communication with a minor in business marketing.

Zach Barry

Zach Berry was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a graduate of Trinity High School in 2005, where he was senior class president and a first-team all-state basketball player. Zach graduated from Georgetown College in 2010 and Brandeis law school in 2013. Zach has been practicing law since 2013 with a focus on personal injury litigation.

Tonya York Dees

Tonya York Dees is President of York Management, Inc., which specializes in business, and economic development related conference, project and event planning. Before starting her own business, she was vice president of Greater Louisville Inc., the Metro Chamber of Commerce, where she ran the Center for Small Business. She serves on the University Of Louisville Board Of Overseers, co-founded the Unbridled Charitable Foundation, and the Unbridled Eve Derby Gala with her sister Tammy. She is a founding board member for Super Student Athletes and serves on the Family Community Clinic Board of Directors.

Tonya holds a CCE (Certified Chamber Executive) designation from the Institutes for Organization Management from UCLA. She holds bachelor and master degrees from the University of Louisville and did graduate work at Exeter College, Oxford University.

Steve Mudd

Steve Mudd is the General Manager for Montgomery Automotive Group. He has been in the auto industry for 11 years. Steve was awarded one of the highest achievements in the auto industry as one of Auto News “Top 40 under 40” for 2016.

When he is not glued to the computer screen learning new methods to make his store more successful and ahead of the curve, he spends time with his three children.

Steve serves as President for Super Student Athletes, Inc. Non Profit foundation. He is a member of, The Greater Louisville Auto Dealers Association, National Minority Dealers Association, and West Louisville Coalition.

Steve has a passion for helping others achieve their goals and accomplish great things in their life.

Dan Murphy

Dan is the owner of BELM Group, LLC, a small technology advising company. Before starting BELM in Oct of 2015, he spent 7 years in sales and recruiting for a custom software development company called igNew. Since graduating college in 2005 Dan has volunteered for a number of non-profit organizations including the Big Brother Big Sisters of Kentucky, The Forecastle Foundation, Family and Children’s Place, and spent seven years on the University of Louisville Alumni Board including four as a member of the executive committee.

Chris Staley

Chris Staley, a Software Engineer, is a graduate of Bellarmine University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science. Chris also received his master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Louisville.

He has designed, developed, and maintained numerous applications for companies including finance, manufacturing, health care, and legal. Chris enjoys sharing ideas with fellow developers that are also deeply passionate about writing well designed and thoroughly tested software

Deryl Sweeney

Deryl is an experienced builder in a non-traditional sense of the word. His history is littered with organizations that he has positively influenced since college. He launched his first business a year after graduating with a business degree from Xavier University in 2001. That company, Sosik, LLC, successfully took a product from idea, to patent, to market, and ended up with retail presence in over 350 college bookstores, Linens-N-Things, the Container Store, and Bed and Bath & Beyond. You can still find versions of the Mini-Mantle, The Original Bedpost Shelf, floating around the market today.

Deryl took what he learned in his first business and launched a second, Dormbuys.com, in 2005. He continued his focus on the college market and built an e-commerce company that featured over 4,000 products for college students and their parents with sales in all 50 states. After eclipsing the million-dollar mark, Deryl sold that business in 2012.

He has always had a passion for making an impact in his community and has served on several non-profit boards throughout his life including Family Scholar House, Outreach Indianapolis, Eyes That See, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and now Super Student Athletes. Additionally, alongside two other families, he and his wife launched their own non-profit in 2015 to raise funds that support finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. In less than two years, Cure CF, Inc. has raised close to $250,000 towards that cure.

Keith Thomerson

Keith is a retired Senior Technical Writer/Trainer. After graduating from the University of Rio Grande, he started his career as a varsity football coach and high school teacher before turning his attention to Information Technology (IT). Keith specialized in the software development process beginning with the mapping process, writing software specifications, writing test scripts, writing training manuals and software user manuals, to training the trainer. His computer training material and instruction manuals have been used throughout the United States and several countries. One of his computer manuals is included in a software program with over 600,000 computer users and is available in 23 languages. Keith continues his education through college classes and keeping up to date with technology.

Latondra Yates

Latondra has worked for local government for 21 years. Currently she works for the Metro Vacant & Public Property Administration. Prior to that, she worked for Metro Planning and Design Services. She also previously worked for the University of Louisville (UofL) in both the Urban and Women’s Studies Departments.

She has an Associate’s degree in Communication, Bachelor’s degree in English, and Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning and Development from UofL. She is also a member of the American Planning Association and past president of the UofL College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Association.

Dawn Wigginton

With a professional history in marketing, online strategy, and digital communication, I have earned a unique skill set and expertise in business development, branding, online brand development, and leadership. I have been honored to work with clients such as American Heart Association, GE, Grand Ole Opry, and Humana.

Offline Specialties include Business Development, Marketing, Strategic Planning, Leadership, Presentations, Project Management, Event Coordination, and Consultation.

Online Specialties include Digital Marketing, Social Media, Email, Paid Search, and Analytics
